Grades 8-9 course particulars

The French 8 high school course (typically offered in Grade 8, the first year of high school in many Canadian and US systems) is generally a Core French course, though it can also be a continuation of a French Immersion program.

Key Language Skills & Content        Students typically learn to exchange information about themselves and their immediate environment, including             

 

1.Personal Introductions & Greetings: Saying hello and goodbye (salutations), introducing self and others (Je me présente).                          

 

 2.The Present Tense: Conjugating common regular -er verbs (like parler - to speak) and important irregular verbs (especially être - to be, and avoir - to have).

Vocabulary Topics                1.Descriptions of people, pets, and personal qualities (using descriptive adjectives).

2.School, classes, and daily schedules.                                           

 

3.Family, friends, and expressing ownership (using possessive adjectives like mon, ma, mes).         

 

4.Likes, dislikes, and hobbies.       

 

5.Food and common verbs used in cooking

Basic Grammar                              1.Nouns and articles (definite and indefinite).                                 

 

2.Adjective agreement (making adjectives match the gender and number of the noun).           

 

3.Forming simple questions and expressing negation.Counting and telling time.

       In frech, you'll need standard school supplies like a notebook, pens, pencils, and a backpack, along with French-specific essentials like a dictionary, a good grammar book, and supplementary learning materials such as bilingual books or music

Activities and Assessment    Learning is often achieved through:                         

 

1.Interactive Activities: Dialogues, short presentations, and skits.                                     

 

2.Projects: Creating things like a family tree, a personal photo album, or a tourism brochure. 

 

3.Comprehension: Reading short, adapted stories and listening to simple dialogues or songs

Students will focus on improving listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on personal and real-life tasks, exploring both Francophone cultures and their own identity. This includes learning advanced vocabulary, French letter patterns, and grammatical structures to discuss events across different timeframes

The French 9 high school course, typically a Core French program, is designed to significantly increase students' communicative independence by expanding on the foundation built in previous years (like Grade 8). The course moves beyond basic introductions to facilitate more meaningful conversations and expression in a variety of real-life contexts

🇫🇷 Key Learning Objectives and                                         Content                                      The curriculum focuses on developing all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) through more complex vocabulary and grammar.Grammar and Linguistic FocusA major step up from French 8 is the more explicit focus on past and future tenses, along with a wider range of verbs. 

                                                                              1.Past Tense (Passé Composé): This is a primary focus, including:Forming the tense using the auxiliary verbs avoir and être.Learning the agreement of the past participle.

 

2.The Near Future (Futur Proche): Reviewing and confidently using the structure aller + infinitive to talk about future plans.                           

 

3.Irregular Verbs: Expanding beyond être and avoir to include high-frequency irregular verbs like faire (to do/make), aller (to go), prendre (to take), vouloir (to want), and pouvoir (to be able to).                                   

 

4.Pronouns: Introducing and practicing the use of:Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns (e.g., le, la, les, lui, leur).Reflexive Verbs (se lever, se brosser) to talk about daily routines.   

 

5.Describing Actions: Using sequence words (premièrement, ensuite, finalement) and different types of adverbs.                                                 

 

6.Question Forms: Practicing all three ways to ask questions: intonation, Est-ce que, and inversion

Intercultural Competence Students continue to explore the richness of Francophone creative works (like music, film, or literature) and develop a deeper appreciation for the variety of Francophone cultures in Canada and around the world. The focus is often on sharing personal experiences and perspectives in French, demonstrating that the language is a vital tool for real-world interaction.
