GRADE 8-9 COURSE PARTICULARS

WHAT ARE SOME  CURRICULUM  TOPICS AND THEMES COVERED IN                            GRADE 8  ? 

               Grade 8 Social studies at palmer is covered in a course called Humanities 8 which is a fusion of English and Socials. This course covers world history from 7th to 1750, focusing on diverse civilizations (Europe, Middle east, Asia, America), It undergoes Key concepts like exploration, colonization, contrast and conflict, and Grand ideas like technology's impact( Printing press, navigation), cultural shifts( Renaissance, Reformation) and the development of political and economic systems, Building skills for critical thinking and understanding diverse perspectives.

KEY THEMES 

​

1. WORLD HISTORY: Although mentioned as a course in the previous page, It is introduced as a  Subject theme in Grade 8. It involves studying and examining the rise and  fall of major global civilizations  and empires across Europe, Africa, Asia, and America(e.g. Roman Empire and Mesoamerican cultures)​. Some topics include:-

  • Global Exploration and Colonization: The interactions between different societies and the effects of social and cultural changes.

  • Major Civilizations: The rise and fall of empires in Europe, America and so many more regions or countries.

  • Transformative Movements: The Renaissance, The Reformation, and the early stages of the Industrial Revolution, and their impacts to society then and now.

2.  GEOGRAPHY: This theme covers both physical and human geography, emphasizing how the environment  and location influence human settlement, culture, and economic activities. ​Some topics include:-

  • Global Awareness: Examining key global issues such as climate change, sustainability and population

  • Maps: In this topic students learn mapping skills like calculating scales  and interpreting thematic maps to understand trade routes, population, and resource use

3.  CIVICS & GOVERNMENT: Students learn about the foundations of government, citizenship, and political processes.

  •  Democracy: This topic dives into the rule of law, separation of powers and individual rights 

  • Government: An introduction to the structure and functions of the Canadian government, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, or the political  systems relevant to the students' location.

  • Active Citizenship: This topic talks about understanding citizen rights and responsibilities and the importance of participation in the democratic process.

RESOURCE ESSENTIALS 

In a Social studies class at Palmer you will need and be using resources like textbooks(which you  will be given depending on the teacher), maps, films, Primary sources like historical documents or photos and Secondary sources like videos and second hand articles,  line paper, 3 ring binder, and writing materials.

WHAT ARE SOME  CURRICULUM  TOPICS AND THEMES COVERED IN                            GRADE 9  ? 

               Grade 9 Social studies at Palmer explores Age of Revolutions ( American, French, Industrial), early European  Exploration & Colonization of North America, and the development of Canadian Identity. They study themes like changing power dynamics, cultural interactions (especially with Indigenous  first peoples), governance and geography to build critical thing and active citizenship .

CORE THEMES 

​

1.  HISTORICAL PERIODS: In this theme there is a major focus on the era of 1750-1919 including the Enlightenment, revolutions ( English, American, French), Indigenous perspectives,  European arrival, cultural clashes and early settlement in North America. Some topics under this theme include:-

  • Imperialism and Colonialism(19th-Early 20th) :  European colonization  and its motivations with how it  created devastating effects in places like  Africa. The Indiana  act treaty on Indigenous peoples in Canada 

  • Age of Revolution (1750s-1800s):   This topic covers revolutions , A revolution is a situation where the people of a country overthrow a government or change how a country is run like  for example the French revolution including the overthrowing of monarchy, Rise of Napoleon, concepts of rights and citizenship as well as Industrial revolution  

 

 2.   THE ENLIGHTENMENT: In this theme the concept of the French Revolution was created and enhanced. In studying this students learn  how these ideas influenced revolutions and modern government. Topics in this theme include:-

  • The Philosophes: Philosophers like Locke, Rousseau and Voltaire who believed in logic and observation over superstition.

  • Human Rights: This idea not only led to the revolution of France but gave ideas about equality, liberty, freedom of speech and so on.., with how its impacts led to the creation of Modern democracies.

3. CANADA'S CONFEDERATION: This theme is very key in Social studies 9 as it talks about how Canada formed a peaceful political union of three British colonies which are the Province of Canada, Nova scotia and New Brunswick into a self governing dominion. Topics under include:-

  • Indigenous-European Relations:  The topic talks about how Indigenous peoples and European settlers interacted from the time Europeans first arrived in what is now Canada, Their relationships and short and long term impacts of those interactions. 

  • Key figures and regions: This topic explains who helped create Canada and which regions joined together to form the country in 1867. It focuses on the people and places that played the biggest roles in bringing Confederation to life.

In summary, The Grade 8 and 9 Social studies courses at Palmer secondary guide students through major global and Canadian historical developments while building critical thinking, Geographic literacy, and an understanding of diverse perspectives. They explore how global civilizations, Revolutionary ideas, and early Canadian history shaped modern political system, Cultural identities, and Democratic values.
