ADVISORY - WHY IS SOCIAL  STUDIES  IMPORTANT TO STUDY AND  LEARN? 

      Social studies equips individuals with the awareness, skills and values to understand  human behavior, make sound judgements and contribute meaningfully to our current diverse and interconnected world. 

  • It Develops Informed Citizens: It provides the knowledge of political systems, historical events, and societal structures needed to be active, engaged participants in a democracy.

  • It introduces  Critical thinking: Students learn to analyze information, evaluate sources, understand cause and effect, and form reasoned conclusions about complex issues.

  • Builds Cultural Understanding & Empathy:  Students learn to analyze information, evaluate sources, understand cause and effect, and form reasoned conclusions about complex issues. 

  • Connects past, present and future: Helps students see how historical events, trends, and decisions shape current societies and influence future possibilities.​

  • Provides Essential life skills: Provides Essential Life Skills: Cultivates communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and research skills applicable in personal life, further education.

  • Explain How Societies work: Integrates subjects like geography, economics, and civics to offer a holistic view of human societies, systems, and global interconnections

Philosophy involves alot of thinking 

WHAT ARE SOME  CURRICULUM  TOPICS AND THEMES COVERED  IN  GRADE 12?

         In Grade 12, There a list of courses which you can take in the pathway of Social studies depending on your area of interest; Some of which are:

      1. 20th century History 12:This course explores the major forces that have shaped modern global history, including the rise of authoritarian governments, civil wars, revolutions, and independence movements that transformed national borders. It examines human rights struggles especially those led by Indigenous peoples alongside religious, ethnic, and cultural conflicts that have sometimes resulted in violence and genocide. Students study major global events such as the World Wars and the Cold War, as well as the impacts of migration, shifting boundaries, and growing international cooperation. The course also looks at how social change and advances in communication and transportation technologies have made today’s world increasingly interconnected.

        2.BC First Peoples 12: This course examines the histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences of B.C. First Peoples, focusing on their relationships with the land, the importance of oral traditions, and exchanges of knowledge and practices among Indigenous and non‑Indigenous communities. Students explore how government policies have shaped responses to colonialism and the many forms of resistance that assert rights and identity. The course also looks at the role of media in supporting or challenging cultural continuity and self‑determination. By comparing traditional and modern governance systems and addressing ongoing challenges rooted in colonial legacies, learners gain insight into the resilience and leadership of B.C. First Peoples.

 

            3. Philosophy 12:This course introduces students to key areas of philosophy by exploring how thinkers build arguments, evaluate evidence, and use reasoning to address complex questions. It covers metaphysical ideas about reality, theories of knowledge and truth, and major concepts in social and political philosophy related to power and justice. Students also examine ethical, moral, and aesthetic theories to understand how people define right action, value, and beauty. Together, these topics provide a strong foundation for analyzing philosophical issues and forming clear, well‑reasoned perspectives.

CONCLUSION

Social studies in Grade 12 offers courses like 20th Century History, BC First Peoples, and Philosophy, each helping students understand global events, Indigenous experiences, and big questions about knowledge, justice, and human behavior. Together, these courses build critical thinking, cultural awareness, and strong communication skills while preparing students for diverse college pathways such as political science, psychology, economics, and history. They also open doors to careers in education, government, public service, business, and research.

ADVISORY-HOW IS SOCIAL STUDIES  BENEFICIAL  TO ME MORE  THAN JUST AS A STUDENT?

          Social studies quietly shapes you in ways that go far beyond passing a class. It may seem like that boring subject that is  practically "a school bed time story program" but its impact follows you into adulthood, your relationships, your career and even how you see yourself. 

       A Social studies teacher at Palmer secondary was asked "You always seem so happy when teaching Social studies.. why?". He smiled and said" The moment  I stepped into my Grade 8 Social studies class I just knew.. that is what i wanted to do when i was older" Which brings us to the:
