GRADE 12 AND ADVISORY ARTICLE
GRADE 12 COURSE RECOMMENDATION
-Advanced Functions (Pre-Calculus 12):
A deep dive into all non-linear functions like Rational, Logarithmic, Exponential, and advanced Trigonometry (identities, complex equations, graphs). Conic sections (parabolas, hyperbolas, ellipses) are often covered.
-Mathematics of Data Management (Statistics 12)
Focuses on managing and interpreting data: Permutations, Combinations, and Probability, different methods of organizing data, and advanced statistics (measures of central tendency, probability distributions).
-Foundations for College Mathematics
Applied math concepts including financial math (annuities, budgets), measurement, geometry, trigonometry, and statistical methods.

POST- SECONDRY PLANNING ADVISORY

-Research Post-Secondary Requirements: Program admission requirements differ between institutions (e.g., sciences, engineering, business, and health care fields all have different math needs). Use resources like EducationPlannerBC and university/college admissions websites to check the specific math courses and minimum grades required.
-Choose the Appropriate High School Math Pathway: In British Columbia, there are three main pathways designed for different post-secondary goals;
-Pre-calculus: Designed for entry into programs requiring theoretical calculus, such as sciences, engineering, or business. This is an academically demanding pathway and the safest choice for students who are undecided about their future path.
-Foundations of Mathematics: For programs that require strong mathematical understanding but not theoretical calculus (e.g., some arts, humanities, and social sciences programs).Workplace Mathematics: Designed for direct entry into most trades and the workforce.
-Meet with an Academic Advisor/Counsellor: High school counsellors can help students with course planning and progress toward graduation, while post-secondary advisors can clarify degree requirements and course options once admitted.
GRADE 12 YEAR ADVISORY
The academic pressure of Grade 12 is compounded by the application process. Advisory programs should stress organization and balance.
-Maintain Conditional Grades: University acceptances are often conditional on maintaining a specific average (e.g., a "B" average or higher) in all courses, including those taken after the application. Advise students that senioritis is a real risk that can jeopardize their acceptance.
-Time Management for Applications: Students must set aside dedicated time weekly for application essays, scholarship searches, and reference requests. These tasks are easily overlooked but are often the deciding factor in admissions.
-Stress Management: The final year is stressful. Emphasize mental health, sleep hygiene, and physical activity. Stress reduction is vital for maximizing performance on final exams
