WHAT ARE SOME  CURRICULUM  TOPICS AND THEMES COVERED IN                            GRADE 10 ? 

         Grade 10 social studies focuses on "Canada and the world", explores 20th-century Canadian identity, government, and conflicts, examining global impacts through themes like political or economic ideologies, Environmental sustainability, injustice & reconciliation and global unity, with specific attention to First Nations experiences, immigration, and human rights, challenging  Canada's multicultural narrative.

KEY THEMES

​

1. First nations: This theme focuses on Indigenous histories, culture, contributions, governance integrating Indigenous perspectives to understand Canada's past and present. Key topics under this theme include:​​

  • Residential schools: This topic explores the  Residential school system which was a network of boarding schools for Indigenous children in Canada, funded by the Federal government and run by christian churches. Operating from 1830s-1996; The system is now recognized as cultural genocide.

  • The Truth and Reconciliation: This a crucial topic in this theme as it talks about the ongoing process in Canada focused on acknowledging the devastating impacts of colonialism and working to build a new respectful relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and implementing Indigenous rights.

2. Cultural genocide : This theme studies the international and systematic destruction of a group's traditions, values, language and other features that make them distinct. Its effects and impacts, Topics under this include : 

  • The Holocaust : This explores the Nazi assault on humanity involving systematic genocide of six million Jews and millions of others. 

  • Dispossession of land: The forced displacement and removal of a group from their traditional lands e.g. First nations people.​

In a Social studies class at Palmer you will need and be using resources like textbooks(which you  will be given depending on the teacher), maps, films, Primary sources like historical documents or photos and Secondary sources like videos and second hand articles,  line paper, 3 ring binder, and writing materials.

WHAT ARE SOME  CURRICULUM  THEMES COVERED  IN  GRADE                                         11? 

       Grade 11 Social Studies is taken as "Explorations", This course is designed to develop a balanced knowledge and critical thinking for the  Grade 12 Social studies level . It covers a sample of various social studies fields, helping students understand different perspectives and make connections between the past events and current affairs. 

 

KEY THEMES

1. Modernization:It talks about Social, cultural or technological innovations and developments in the 20th century This theme was adapted from 20th century world history 12.

2. The struggle of the Indeginous people: This theme dives into the aspect of coloniaism and contemporary issues for Indeginous people in Canada and around the world. This theme was adapted from Contemporary Indeginous studies 12.

 

3. Current affairs: This goes into current issues in local, regional, national, or global politics as represented. in mass media.This theme was adapted fro political studies 12. 

 

4. Geopolitics: Geopolitics is a theme that contains information on natural, and good scales. This concept, adapted from Human Geography 12, examines how geographical factors influence international relations and power dynamics. 

 

5. Diversity in canada: This talks about the diversity of BC First Peoples territories ad communities. This is adapted from from BC First peoples 12. 

 

6. Rights: This talks about Induviduals in Canada which is adapte as a ourse from law studies 12.

CONCLUSION

In summary, The Grade 10 and 11 courses transition from a foundational study of Canadian identity to a broad exploration of specialized global affairs . Grade 10, "Canada and the World," focuses on 20th-century national history, emphasizing the impact of political ideologies, environmental sustainability, and the profound legacy of Indigenous experiences through topics like the Residential School system and Truth and Reconciliation.
